San Diego Homeless Neighbor, Giving Back in Time of Need

San Diego Homeless Neighbor, Giving Back in Time of Need

Streets of Hope San Diego thanks our homeless neighbor, Robert, for giving back to the community amidst his own time of need. His immediate needs are bolded in this article for those who wish to donate directly to Robert.

We first met Robert on the corner of 15th and Market in downtown San Diego, dressed in a faded light gray tee-shirt, cuffed black pants, and a pair of white and black converse (he’d just received yesterday). We caught him crossing the street carrying a plastic coffee cup and multiple items of trash. This, he shared, is his way of giving back to the community.

“I’m so grateful for Streets of Hope and everything you do. It’s important to me to show my gratitude and give back to the community by picking up trash.”

Robert is on the streets everyday picking up trash to better the environment for all who call San Diego home. Since he often encounters piles of broken glass, a dustpan and small broom would be helpful to him.

We were able to give Robert a blanket and tent but his other needs include a sleeping bag, work clothes (XL shirt and 32/32 pants) and a bike to help take him to and from work. Yes! Robert has a job offer!

A neighborhood grocery store spotted Robert during one of his many diligent efforts to pick up trash and offered to pay him for his work. He’s been offered a role as a floater as soon as he can replace his ID and Social Security card which were previously stolen.

We’re rooting for Robert and his new job that should help streamline the process of moving him into housing.

He’s been homeless just over two years but has been in San Diego only a week and a half, having moved down from LA toward warmer weather. Only a week and a half in, and he already has a job offer! We see you, Robert, and respect your work ethic and community-mindset. Thank you for your contribution and welcome to the neighbor!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Robert mentioned he can sing! So if you get the pleasure of meeting him in person (he’s the one collecting trash) ask his favorite song!

You can donate directly to Robert HERE or support others like him by joining us Monday Night or donating to Street of Hope.
