Monday Night Serving the San Diego Homeless – The Story of Charles

This past Monday Night, like always, we were on the streets in downtown San Diego passing out food and water.

A a few us (see the photo) from the group  ran into Charles. Charles has been homeless for only 2 weeks and a few days ago he was robbed. Someone tried to take things from his backpack while he slept on it. When he awoke, the robber punched him in the face and took off with the backpack. Charles chased after him but wasn’t able to catch the thief.

After we gave him a sandwich we had made earlier, and some chips, he told us he’s “not your average homeless.” He began to tell us about how he graduated from college with a degree in engineering from San Diego State University. After he lost his job here in San Diego, he didn’t have the courage to tell his family. He has 5 kids, all ranging in age from 19 to 24 and all are in college.

We felt compelled to challange to tell his kids. Reminding him that if one of them came to him with a similiar story, he would help them. He confessed he was too prideful to do it and “had a plan” to get off the streets.

He asked us to pray over him so we did.

We’ll keep praying for you Charles.
